Mosquitoes are extremely annoying to deal with and their bites will leave your skin swollen and hurting in the area where you have been bitten. There are many repellents on the market that are designed to be sprayed on the skin. Unfortunately, some of them contain harmful ingredients that can get into the bloodstream. However, there are natural alternatives available that only require a spray bottle and the mixing of some easy to find ingredients.

Garlic Repellent

To make this repellent you will need:

  1. two or three cloves of minced garlic
  2. one teaspoon of lemon juice
  3. a tablespoon of mineral oil
  4. two cups of water

Method:

Mince the garlic as finely as possible and place it into a small bowl. Add the tablespoon of mineral oil to it. Let the mineral oil and garlic sit for at least a day. After twenty four hours has passed, drain off the oil into two cups of water. Add a teaspoon of lemon juice and stir the mixture well. Pour the ingredients into a spray bottle for easy application to the skin.

Lemon and Eucalyptus Repellent

The ingredients for this repellent are:

  1. lemon eucalyptus oil
  2. sunflower oil or witch hazel

Method:

For every ten parts of sunflower oil or witch hazel that you use, mix in one part of the lemon eucalyptus oil. Stir the mixture before pouring it into a spray bottle. Apply to the skin as needed.

Some natural mosquito repellents do not require any mixing and these are perhaps the best ones of all. The two repellents below offer a simple, fast and easy solution to keeping mosquitoes away.

Lavender Repellent

If you are fortunate enough to have lavender growing in your backyard then this repellent will cost you nothing. However, if you do not have this plant growing in your yard, you can buy it at your local home and garden store. Repel mosquitoes by picking a few pieces of the flower and rubbing it on your wrists, neck and ears. The smell of lavender is pleasant to humans but has the opposite effect on mosquitoes.

Vanilla Repellent

This repellent is easy to make. All you need is some vanilla extract or essence of vanilla. Apply it to your wrists, ears and neck to naturally repel mosquitoes.

Natural repellents cost very little and are a great alternative to store bought repellents. The best thing about homemade repellents is that they are safe to use and extremely effective.
