Storms are notorious for producing high winds and heavy rains. If you live near water, storms can also cause hurricanes and floods. Storms can wreak havoc on your home, which is why you need to be prepared. If you're not, you could end up paying a lot of money to make repairs to your home. If you live in an area that gets bad storms or hurricanes, you should stormproof your home before storm season hits.

Here are three ways to stormproof your home:

1. Protect Your Windows

Since windows are made out of a breakable material, they can sustain serious damage during a storm, to the point of being completely destroyed. This is especially the case if the storm involves hail or high winds that blow debris through the air. One of the best ways to protect your windows is to install storm shutters.

Some of the most common types of storm shutters include:

  • Rolling shutters
  • Storm panels
  • Colonial shutters
  • Bermuda shutters
  • Accordion shutters

If it's hurricane season where you live, you can also install specially-made hurricane shutters.

2. Get Your Garage Door Ready

You don't want to overlook your garage door when getting ready for a storm or preparing for hurricane season. If your garage door is old or damaged, it might not withstand strong winds. For this reason, you may want to consider buying a new one. When buying a brand new one, you'll want to look for a wind-resistant garage door that contains a layer of steel.

If you don't want to fork out the money for a brand new garage door, and your current one is still in good shape, you can stormproof it by installing a retrofit kit. These kits have a bracing system that get installed on the inside of the garage door.

3. Check Your Gutters and Downspouts

Another part of your home that is important for protecting you during a storm is your roof. For this reason, you'll want to be sure it's not at risk for getting water damage. Checking your gutters and downspouts can prevent this from happening.

Your gutters and downspouts allow water to flow down to the ground so that it doesn't stay on your roof. If they are blocked with debris, your gutters and downspouts will not be able to work as they should. If they contain debris during a storm, it could mean your roof and even your attic could receive water damage, as the water will have nowhere to go.
